The Iron Man by Ted Hughes is full of literary devices such as similes, metaphors and personification. Examples of these and more are explored to give pupils a deeper understanding of the text and enable them to create their own to enhance their writing. Pupils can research and create the instructional text about one of the faeries from Arthur Spiderwick’s field guide, such as a brownie, boggart, goblin, dwarf, griffin, kelpie, unicorn or troll. These activities can be carried out over several lessons.
